How we help · Education
For universities, TAFE and K-12

Open by mission. Resilient by design.

Education sits at an awkward intersection. Open research culture. A young user base. Regulated student data. And a target surface that includes everything from MOOC platforms to building management. Lumaris helps providers protect what matters without closing down the openness that defines the sector.

Why education is on the agenda now

Three forces reshaping institutional IT.

— 01

Generative AI has moved into the classroom, and the assessment

Faculty AI policy, academic integrity systems, and AI-assisted teaching tools all carry risk. Providers need positions that hold up to TEQSA, ASQA, and the public.

— 02

Student data is now critical infrastructure

TEQSA and CRICOS reporting, OAIC rules, and the new SOCI thresholds for higher-education research all touch student data. Breaches now move faster than reputational repair.

— 03

Hybrid campuses run on dozens of vendors

LMS, SIS, identity, library, BMS, research compute, and student wellbeing platforms. Most institutions have hundreds of integrations and limited end-to-end visibility.

How we work in education

Capabilities tuned to open, federated environments.

Responsible AI in teaching & learning

Policy frameworks, academic-integrity tooling, and evidence packs for AI-assisted assessment and student-facing copilots.

Student data platforms

Lakehouses for SIS, LMS, and engagement data with privacy, traceability, and consent enforced through the data flow.

Identity for the full journey

Federated identity, joining-and-leaving management, and modern access for staff, students, alumni, and research collaborators.

Research-grade cyber

Controls calibrated to research data classifications, including ITAR, defence-funded work, and overseas collaborator access.

Cloud for hybrid campuses

Cloud foundations that span teaching, research compute, administrative systems, and operational systems, with cost limits for grant-funded workloads.

Critical-asset uplift

SOCI-aligned uplift for institutions captured by higher-education research thresholds.

The landscape we read

Universities are navigating growth, constraint, and heightened security risk simultaneously.

International student caps have forced a strategic pivot toward research commercialisation, offshore campuses, and new revenue models. Each of these creates new data risk. At the same time, AI adoption is accelerating across every function. The security environment is becoming more demanding, not less.

Legacy infrastructure

Decades of systems built for openness, integrated with modern AI and cloud platforms

Australian universities hold some of the oldest and most complex IT environments outside government. Research databases, administrative systems, and library infrastructure built across multiple technology eras coexist with modern cloud platforms and SaaS tools. Integrating AI into this environment without visibility of underlying data flows creates risks. Those risks are difficult to map. They are slower to fix.

  • Legacy research databases without modern access controls
  • Federated identity systems that grant broad access by default
  • Library and administrative systems with limited audit logging
Research and IP

Sensitive research data flowing through environments not built for classification

As research commercialisation grows, the data inside universities is becoming materially more valuable to attackers. Defence research. AI training data. Industry-partnership IP. Indigenous data. All carry obligations that standard university infrastructure was not designed to meet.

  • Defence research operating outside dedicated secure zones
  • Indigenous data without sovereignty controls or community oversight
  • Industry-partnership IP without contractual or technical protection
AI adoption

AI tools entering through multiple channels without unified oversight

AI tools arrive in universities through procurement, individual academic adoption, vendor-embedded features in existing platforms, and student use. Few institutions have visibility of their full AI footprint, let alone the data flows that accompany it.

  • AI use in research without ethics or data-handling review
  • Academic and administrative AI tools outside the procurement perimeter
  • Student-facing AI without alignment to academic integrity frameworks
Proof points

Outcomes academic boards and chancellors will accept.

  • AI policy framework covering teaching, research, and administration.
  • Federated identity uplift across staff, student, and research collaborator personas.
  • Privacy-by-design student data platform with TEQSA and OAIC alignment.
  • Cyber readiness uplift sequenced around teaching periods and research grant cycles.
  • Hybrid campus cloud foundation with research compute and BMS in scope.
  • Risk-management plan design for institutions captured by SOCI higher-education thresholds.
The rules we work to

The rules we work to.

We work to the major Australian rules for higher education. TEQSA and CRICOS cover provider obligations. OAIC and state privacy rules cover student data. Critical-infrastructure rules now apply to designated higher-education research. See the glossary for what each one covers and when it bites.
